AmsterDog Rescue began as a result of the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina when a small group of volunteers came together to help animals in need in the affected New Orleans region. In addition to fundraising, the volunteers also rescued several van-loads of abandoned dogs, brought them back up to the Northeast and placed them in forever homes. In the process of that rewarding endeavor, we became aware of how many precious adoptable dogs and cats were being put down every day, right here in our own city shelters, simply because of shelter overcrowding and a lack of awareness among the community.
With a desire to help save these beautiful lives, we formed a small rescue effort and became an established group in May 2010 called AmsterDog Rescue, named after our beloved dog “Amsterdam”, found on the very avenue after which he was named. “Amsterdam” had been found wandering the streets of Harlem, a large, white, 70-pound pitbull mix, who many people would cross the street to avoid simply because of his misperceived “intimidating appearance”, when in fact, he is a big mush of a dog, loves to nuzzle, get belly rubs, and has a calming affect on everyone around him. He is our proof that it is not us that rescue them; ultimately, it is they that rescue us!
Today, AmsterDog Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit organization comprised entirely of volunteers. All donations received go solely to help saving at-risk shelter animals by providing necessities for placement such veterinary care, rehabilitative training, supplies, transportation, and other related expenses.
At AmsterDog Rescue, we are dedicated to the plight of abandoned animals, finding loving, responsible foster and adoptive homes, with special focus on abused animals, all of whom find themselves at-risk in city shelters through no fault of their own.
Through our experiences, we have learned that this well-known quote is entirely the truth: “Saving one dog will not change the world, but for that one dog, their world will change forever”.
We rely on our wonderful cross-posters and networking volunteers to help us find the right home for each pet. We sincerely thank our supporters for donating, helping to raise awareness about the plight of shelter pets, and for sharing our adoptable pets in need! We can’t do it without YOU!

As of year-end 2016, AmsterDog’s “Life Saving Percentage” is 99%.
This calculation is derived by dividing total live outcomes (adoptions, outgoing
transfers, and return to owner/guardian) by total outcomes (total live outcomes plus euthanasia not
including owner/guardian requested euthanasia or died/lost in shelter/care).
